Head-on crash in Shandaken sends 5 to hospitals

SHANDAKEN — Officers responded to the report of a two-car motor vehicle accident involving a 2024 Dodge Ram Van and a 2024 Toyota Corolla on State Route 28 in the Big Indian area of the Town of Shandaken at about 9:03 a.m. June 13.

It was determined the operator of the Toyota Corolla, a 62-year-old male from New South Wales, Australia, was traveling eastbound in the westbound lane of State Route 28 when he struck the 2024 Dodge Ram Van head-on.

The operator suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Albany Medical Center.

The passenger of the Toyota Corolla was also airlifted to Albany Medical Center.

The Dodge Ram Van operator suffered minor injuries and was transported to Health Alliance of the Hudson Valley Broadway Campus in Kingston for further treatment.

The two passengers of the Dodge Ram Van were also transported with minor injuries to Health Alliance of the Hudson Valley Broadway Campus in Kingston for further treatment.

At this time there appears to be no criminality involved with this accident and the investigation remains open.

Officers were assisted by the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, Phoenicia Fire Department, Shandaken Fire Department, Ulster County Emergency Communications, Big Indian Fire Department, Olive First Aid and Shandaken Ambulance.
