UTICA A shooting investigation was started when the Utica Police Department reported on May 17 that a man had been wounded in the leg.
The case was referred to the department’s Major Crimes Unit, which concluded that the victim was sitting in a car when the wound happened and that it was self-inflicted.
Dwayne Russell, 39, of Ilion, was taken into custody by Major Crimes investigators on June 24.
Russell was accused of both criminal possession of a firearm and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree.
Russell’s current custody status and the circumstances surrounding the incident were not disclosed by the police.
