The group that created Lubec’s Lost Fishermen’s Memorial is reevaluating its choice to omit Chester and Aaron Barrett’s names. When their scallop boat sank off the coast of Trescott in January while they were traveling from Edmunds to South Addison, the two perished.
The decision follows a ceremony at the memorial on Monday, the first official Commercial Fishing Remembrance Day, which garnered renewed attention.
Liz Michaud is not associated with the Lubec Historical Society, which is in charge of the memorial, but she did assist in planning Monday’s service on Lubec’s Remembrance Day.
She claimed to have been informed this week that the committee would reevaluate the Barretts’ inclusion.
“So I’m very optimistic this is going to be rectified,” Michaud stated. “Obviously, they must make that decision for themselves, and I have no say in the matter, but at least I know they’re paying attention. This is going to be revived.
According to Michaud, she had applied for the Barretts’ inclusion prior to the memorial day, but she was informed that the Barretts did not fit the memorial’s condition that a person be actively fishing at the time of their death.
Her words, “The community rallied together,” “So if anything, I would say in both situations, the community was very has been very tight knit and united in honoring and respecting all lost fishermen, including that situation with the monument.”
