School board member resigns over policy to restrict transgender girls’ participation in sports

Following the board’s decision last month to amend its official Title IX policy to limit transgender girls’ participation in sports, a school board member at RSU 73 in Livermore Falls is stepping down.

In Jay, Bryan Riley called the vote “unnecessary” and “reckless,” and he chastised the board for relying on the guidance of an outside law firm instead of the district’s legal counsel when making its choice.

Elaine Fitzgerald, another board member, read Riley’s letter on Thursday, in which he voiced his worries.

“Fishing for a legal opinion that matches one’s personal beliefs is a good way to waste taxpayer money and erode the trust that exists between faculty and the board,” Riley stated.

Linda Dean, a community member, also voiced her opposition to the ruling, claiming it violates Maine state law.

The problem is that there isn’t a single transgender student participating in athletics inside our educational system. As far as I’m aware, the entire state has one. What precisely is the issue being resolved here, then? “Danny said.”

Riley gave health issues as an additional justification for his resignation from the board.
