Amid anti-sunscreen movement, Maine dermatologists urge people not to discontinue use

Dermatologists in Maine are cautioning about a social media movement that opposes sunscreen.

Some people have stopped wearing sunscreen due to concerns about its ingredients, opting instead to gradually expose their skin or use cow tallow instead.

However, dermatologist Tom Bander of MaineHealth claims that no research has shown that sunscreen is harmful to people. Additionally, he asserts that tanned skin does not negate the substantial danger of UV damage resulting in skin cancer.

“So the more time you spend out in the sun even with a little bit of protection from your own skin pales in comparison to the amount of damage you’re doing by the increased UV radiation,” according to him.

Bander suggests mineral sunscreen and UPF garments for anybody who would rather not use chemical sunscreen.

Skin cancer is the most prevalent type of cancer in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
