At Fort Stewart, an Army base in southeast Georgia, a sergeant opened fire on his colleagues Wednesday, injuring five soldiers who are in stable condition, according to Army officials.

Brig. Gen. John Lubas, the commanding general of the 3rd Infantry Division, identified the suspect as Sgt. Quornelius Radford, an automated logistics employee, during a press conference on Wednesday afternoon. According to Lubas, Radford used a personal firearm and the victims were his coworkers. Radford has never before been sent to a battle zone, he continued.

“Immediately and without hesitation,” Lubas added, a number of soldiers who saw the shooting tackled and overpowered the gunman, enabling law enforcement to apprehend him. Army investigators have spoken with the suspect; charges will be decided later.

According to Lubas, all five of the patients were anticipated to recover, although three of the soldiers needed surgery. They have also informed their families.

According to a Facebook post by Fort Stewart, the shooter was captured around 11:35 a.m. local time after law enforcement arrived at the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team location at 10:56 a.m. Approximately 40 miles from Savannah, the Army installation was momentarily under lockdown.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp issued a statement earlier on Wednesday expressing his and his family’s sadness at the violence.

“We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same,” he concluded.
