Crash on I-81 in Lafayette closes highway for 2 hours

At 5:55 a.m. on July 2, LAFAYETTE State Police were called to a collision on Interstate 81 northbound.

Jacob E. Hagenbuch, 28, of Central Square, New York, was driving a 2020 Chrysler minivan when it collided with the back trailer of a 2024 Freightliner driven by Guybenson Louis Jean, 43, of Orlando, Florida.

The trailer was engulfed in flames after the minivan caught fire.

Hagenbuch was brought by ambulance to Upstate Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after he got out of the car prior to the fire.

Jean was not hurt.

Because he followed too closely, Hagenbuch received a ticket.

For almost two hours, I-81 northbound between Tully (exit 67) and Lafayette (exit 73) was blocked to suppress the fire and clean up before reopening.
