Around 7:31 a.m., New York State Police Troop T Zone 2 arrived at the scene of the crash close to mile marker 182.6.
Merwin W. Wells, 63, of Fort Plain, was driving an eastbound 2025 Peterbilt dump truck when he apparently had a coughing episode and momentarily passed out.
The car crossed all westbound lanes, swerved into the median from the left shoulder, broke through the center guide rail, and smashed through the north-side guide rail.
The truck struck the house at 24 Washington Street after continuing through a wooded area and down a steep embankment.
The home’s back main bedroom was struck and demolished by the truck.
At the time of the collision, a 51-year-old man and his two kids, ages 24 and 20, were living in the house.
There were no reported injuries to the tenants, and none of the residents were in the affected room when the collision occurred.
Wells was sent to Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville for treatment after suffering minor wounds.
An estimated 150 gallons of oil leaked after the collision broke a home heating oil tank behind the house.
The cleaning was handled by the spill response team from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
Personnel from the Thruway Authority, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and the Fonda-Fultonville Fire Department provided support to the State Police.
