EAST HAVEN — Following an extensive investigation into a July 2023 motor vehicle accident that resulted in the death of a 19-year-old bicyclist, the East Haven Police Department has arrested Stephen Cote, 35, of North Haven.

The investigation determined that on July 16, 2023, Cote was operating a 2008 Chevrolet Equinox westbound on Foxon Road when he struck Joshua Cervero, who was riding a bicycle with two friends.

Cervero succumbed to his injuries at Yale New Haven Hospital on July 18, 2023.

The case involved months of detailed investigative work conducted by Detective Jon Trinh, including crash reconstruction, vehicle inspection, and forensic video analysis.

Investigators determined that Cote was traveling at an estimated 57 mph in a posted 35 mph zone and that his vehicle had a non-functioning right headlight at the time of the collision.

Police determined that intoxication did not play a factor in the collision.

Cote has been charged with negligent homicide with a motor vehicle, traveling unreasonably fast, and failure to have headlamps.

Cote turned himself in to East Haven Police headquarters on June 11 and is scheduled to appear in court on June 25 at New Haven Superior Court.
