East Meadow man arrested on explosives charges after traffic stop

EAST MEADOW — A 56-year-old East Meadow man was arrested Friday on explosives charges after police discovered a large quantity of fireworks in his vehicle during a traffic stop.

Mario Calderon was pulled over at 5:29 p.m. June 13 near Front Street and Gates Avenue after officers observed his 2005 Cadillac Escalade traveling eastbound on Front Street with an obstructed license plate.

Bureau of Special Operations officers activated their emergency lights and sirens to conduct the vehicle and traffic law stop.

During the investigation, officers observed a large quantity of fireworks in the vehicle.

Calderon was arrested without incident.

Arson/Bomb Squad detectives responded to the scene and safely secured the fireworks.

Calderon was charged with possession of explosives without a license, storage of explosives, aggravated unlicensed operation first degree revocation and multiple moving violations.
