Holyoke police officers rescue driver from burning vehicle

HOLYOKE — Two Holyoke police officers rescued a trapped driver from a burning vehicle early Saturday morning on the Interstate 391 North exit ramp.

Officers Genesis Saenz and Yashira Loyd were responding to an unrelated motor vehicle crash on Jackson Street and Commercial Street at approximately 2:15 a.m. June 14 when they heard a loud crash nearby.

The officers responded to the I-391 North exit ramp area and found a vehicle that had struck a tree.

They observed an injured and possibly unconscious man behind the wheel who was trapped inside the vehicle.

Officers Saenz and Loyd, along with a Holyoke citizen, pried open the door and found the driver, a 29-year-old man, conscious and moving slowly.

With smoke and fire coming from the hood of the vehicle, the officers removed the man from the vehicle and carried him to a safe location.

The officers extinguished the fire with their fire extinguisher.

Members of the Holyoke Fire Department, Cataldo EMT’s and the Massachusetts State Police arrived on scene shortly after.

The Massachusetts State Police is investigating the crash.
