“Operation Robocall,” a multi-state initiative to combat the issue, was started by Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey.
37 voice service providers have received warning letters from Frey and 50 other attorneys general urging them to act immediately to prevent unlawful robocalls from being sent over their networks.
According to Frey, these voice providers are not complying with FCC regulations, and they are permitting robo-callers to use their phone networks before forwarding their calls to other providers until they are received by Maine residents.
Frey said the initiative was a first step in addressing a large number of robocalls directed at Mainers.
According to a statement from Frey, robocalls are more than simply a bother; they are a major way for con artists to contact unsuspecting victims. The businesses that are taking these calls are not subject to the American legal system, but the scammers are. This is the first step in warning these companies that unless they take steps to stop potential scammers from using their networks, we will hold them responsible for their involvement in these robocalls.
