MORGAN Vermont s Department of Environmental Protection has awarded approximately $37,000 to the town of Morgan in partnership with the Seymour Lake Association to support the Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Program at Seymour Lake.
The program has successfully prevented the spread of invasive species since 2000 by inspecting boats entering the lake and educating users about invasive species spread prevention methods and their effects on water bodies.
The program operates seven days per week, 12 hours per day at the Seymour Lake fishing access from Memorial Day weekend until the end of October. A boat decontamination station will decontaminate watercraft and equipment entering Seymour Lake from at-risk water bodies where invasive species are present.
Due to the recent discovery of invasive zebra mussels in Lake Memphremagog, officials say the boater education and watercraft inspection program is crucial to maintain Seymour Lake as an invasive species-free waterbody.
Boaters are advised to wait 30 days after leaving Lake Memphremagog to ensure watercraft is fully dry before entering another invasive species-free waterbody.
