WOODBURY After a traffic stop on Interstate 87 on June 14, New York State Police detained a 54-year-old man from Newburgh for driving under the influence.
When a trooper on routine patrol noticed a 2019 gray Nissan Rogue parked on the right shoulder of the road close to Central Valley, Carlos A. Mejia was charged.
When the trooper arrived, the operator—later identified as Mejia—was standing outside the car.
In the first interview, Mejia said he had stopped on his way back from a Yonkers family get-together.
The car also had a 7-year-old girl and an adult passenger.
The trooper saw indicators of impairment, such as bloodshot, watery eyes, and a strong alcoholic beverage odor on Mejia’s breath while they were conversing.
Inside the car, open beer containers were seen.
After displaying multiple signs of impairment during field sobriety tests, Mejia acknowledged consuming a few beers.
Mejia was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, aggravated DUI with a child in the car, alcohol consumption in a car, failing to buckle up a child passenger, and stopping or standing on pavement.
On Wednesday, July 23 at 4:30 p.m., Mejia was given appearance tickets, which she was to return to the Town of Woodbury Court.
