NEWPORT — Sixteen students and healthcare workers have been selected to receive scholarships through the North Country Hospital Scholarship Award Program, including local high school graduates, college students and hospital employees.
The original Healthcare Career Scholarship, funded by the annual North Country Hospital Scholarship Golf Classic, awarded six scholarships this year. Lake Region graduates Xavier Chapdelaine, Kelby Knights and Ava Perkins received awards, along with North Country Union High School graduate Myah Couture and college students Addie and Reese Petit.
The 37th annual golf scramble is scheduled for Saturday, September 6, at Newport Country Club.
The Caryl B. Custer Scholarship for Nursing Students went to five recipients. Three North Country Union High School graduates — Hayden Boivin, Emerson Gilson and Emma Marquis — received awards, along with Lake Region graduate Lauren Legacy and NCH employee Meghan Davis. The renewable $1,000 scholarship fund was created by summer resident Dr. Keith Custer in memory of his wife Caryl, a former nurse manager in Florida who supported many nursing students during her career.
New to the program this year is the Mary Jean Grime Memorial Scholarship for radiology study, established by her husband Thomas through fundraising. One-time $500 scholarships were awarded to Lake Region graduates Makyla Bacon, Keira Quintal and Audrey Rhodes.
The Toni Smith Memorial Scholarship for students in Respiratory Care provided a renewable $1,000 scholarship to Heather Alexander, a Lake Region graduate.
The Sheryl M. (Washburn) and Buddy L. Carter Nursing Scholarship went to North Country Hospital employee Michaela Sheltra. The scholarship honors Sheryl Washburn, who served as Vice President of Patient Care at North Country Hospital from 2008 through 2013 and was passionate about supporting Northeast Kingdom residents pursuing nursing degrees.
Students and adults can apply for scholarships covering two-year, four-year and graduate programs. More information is available by calling the Communications/Foundation office at (802) 334-4186.
