Palmyra man charged with attempted murder in Perinton trail stabbing

PERINTON A 30-year-old Palmyra man is accused of unprovokedly stabbing a victim at a well-known event on June 23 and has been charged with attempted murder.

near 11:50 a.m., deputies from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to a stabbing report near the Indian Hill Park Trailhead, located at 7025 Pittsford Palmyra Road.

Authorities said the victim was struck from behind by another man he passed while strolling along the trail.

According to the deputies, the suspect violently abused the victim, knocking him to the ground and stabbing him many times with a hunting knife.

Deputies found the victim when they arrived and started setting up a perimeter as emergency medical personnel provided assistance.

The suspect was seen turning into Egypt Park after driving east on Pittsford Palmyra Road, according to Perinton Park Security.

When deputies arrived at the park, they were able to apprehend the man.

The person had non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition.

Under the supervision of the Major Crimes Unit, investigators conducted witness interviews while evidence technicians analyzed the crime scene.

Derrick A. Van Epps, 30, of Palmyra, is accused of two charges of second-degree assault, a class D felony, and attempted murder in the second degree, a class A-II felony.

Van Epps was committed to the Monroe County Jail on a $50,000 cash or $150,000 bond after being arraigned in CAP Court.

There are no unsolved suspects, according to authorities, and Van Epps acted alone.
