SOUTH KINGSTOWN — Police are warning residents about fraudulent text messages claiming to be from the Rhode Island DMV and other government agencies.
The South Kingstown Police Department said the scam messages often threaten license suspension or legal action and demand immediate payment through suspicious links.
Police said the Rhode Island DMV and other government agencies do not send unsolicited text messages regarding outstanding violations or account issues.
Residents who receive similar messages via text or email should not click any links, provide personal information or give money, police said.
Police said residents with questions about suspicious messages can email [email protected] for assistance.
