SCHENECTADY — An 18-year-old student was arrested after a loaded handgun was found in her bag at Schenectady High School on Friday afternoon.
Lara Lapoint of Schenectady was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, a class C felony, and criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds, a class E felony.
Police community engagement officers were alerted by school staff at approximately 12:01 p.m. June 13 to a possible weapon detected by metal detectors at the school’s entryway.
Officers detained the student and confiscated what appeared to be a loaded handgun from her belongings.
The student was taken to Schenectady Police Department headquarters and questioned by detectives.
The school was placed on a brief hold as a precaution, which has since been lifted.
The police department is working with the school district in the investigation.
