Utica man arrested in Illinois for Walker Street homicide

UTICA In relation to the death of a Utica resident in April, a 32-year-old man from Illinois has been taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder.

The Utica Police Department reports that Darius Steward was arrested in Springfield, Illinois, in early June and was arraigned in Oneida County on June 23.

The allegations are related to the death of 33-year-old Omar Mitchell on Walker Street on April 22.

The investigation was handled by the Major Crimes Unit of the Utica Police Department, which promptly identified a suspect.

A grand jury heard the case from the Oneida County District Attorney’s Office and returned an indictment for second-degree murder.

In order to find Steward, the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office Warrants Unit collaborated with the Utica Police Department Warrants Unit and the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force.

Information that Steward might be in the Springfield, Illinois, area was reported to the police in early June.

Steward was found and taken into custody with the help of the local U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force.

After his arraignment, Steward was detained and taken to the Oneida County Jail.
