WATERVLIET — A 16-year-old male was charged with felony assault after allegedly punching a police officer in the face during an incident at Clinton Park on June 12.
Watervliet Police officers responded to a report of a large group fighting at Clinton Park at approximately 5:30 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers located a male juvenile who reported that he had been assaulted by multiple individuals who punched and kicked him while he was on the ground.
An officer observed several individuals believed to be involved in the incident at McDonald’s.
When an officer attempted to make contact with the group, a 16-year-old male became confrontational and began making threatening statements toward the officer.
The juvenile then spat at the officer and struck the officer in the face with a closed fist causing minor injuries.
While officers attempted to place the 16-year-old into custody, two additional juveniles attempted to interfere with the lawful arrest.
Neighboring law enforcement agencies responded to provide mutual aid and assist in dispersing the unruly crowd.
Watervliet Police charged a 16-year-old male from Watervliet with Assault in the 2nd Degree (Class D Felony), Harassment in the 2nd Degree (Violation), Resisting Arrest (Class A Misdemeanor), and Obstruction (Class A Misdemeanor).
Additionally, 16-year-old and 15-year-old males were charged with Resisting Arrest (Class A Misdemeanor), and Obstruction (Class A Misdemeanor).
All three juveniles were released with an appearance ticket to return to Albany County Family Court at a later date and released to their guardians.
