Worcester man indicted in 2008 stabbing death of college student

WORCESTER According to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early, Jr., a grand jury in Worcester County issued a murder indictment against one guy this week for the 2008 stabbing death of a teenager in the vicinity of North Ashland Street in Worcester.

Worcester resident Marquis Brown, 40, was charged with one count of murder in connection with the death of William Smith, a 19-year-old student at Becker College.

The investigation also led to the indictment of another individual on one count of perjury.

On June 6, Worcester Superior Court arraigned Steven Black, 39, who was later released on $5,000 cash bond, terms of release, and a GPS tracking device.

Officers from Worcester Police responded to allegations of a big fight at 101 Highland Street on September 21, 2008.

Officers on the scene discovered a sizable crowd and multiple ongoing altercations.

When an officer arrived at the corner of Dix Street and North Ashland Street, he saw someone carrying Smith, who had been stabbed in the chest.

After being taken to a nearby hospital, Smith was declared dead.

Brown was apprehended without incident in Worcester after the indictment on Tuesday.

He was detained without bail after being charged with one count of murder in Worcester Superior Court yesterday.

On July 21, his case will go back to court.

The Worcester Police Department looked into this case.

The Worcester County District Attorney’s Office and Worcester Police Department worked to review and close all open homicide cases, which led to the charges.
