Worcester police arrest man in fatal Southgate Street shooting

A 26-year-old male was taken into custody by Worcester police in relation to a June 21 shooting death on Southgate Street.

Around 7:40 p.m., officers were called to several reports of gunfire.

Officers found a man victim lying on the sidewalk when they arrived and started helping him right away.

After being taken to a hospital, the person was declared dead.

Antonio Canales-Martinez was taken into custody by police shortly after.

Armed assault to murder, assault and battery with a firearm, aggravated assault and battery with serious bodily damage, and firing a firearm within 500 feet of a residence are the charges against Canales-Martinez.

A firearm was processed on the spot by the Crime Scene Unit.

The event is being looked into by the Detective Bureau.
